A rural municipality in the centre of Lithuania - Panevėžys district is the first municipality in Lithuania which received WiFi4EU voucher.
The WiFi4EU team met the mayor Povilas Žagunis and spoke about the Wi-Fi development plans in the municipality.
The Panevėžys district municipality is one of the first 19 Lithuanian municipalities that was awarded the WiFi4EU voucher, after the first call in November 2018.
The € 15,000 voucher will help to build the Wi-Fi hot spots in the 13 points across this rural municipality counting some 37,000 inhabitants. As of this autumn, people will be able to use free of charge public Wi-Fi in the municipality's administration buildings and towns' centers as well as the district's park.
The mayor Povilas Žagunis is proud that his lead municipality is among the winning municipalities in Lithuania: "We are happy that our municipality is among the first municipalities in Lithuania leading WiFi4EU project. We will soon finish the installation of the free public Wi-Fi access points. We are consulting our colleagues from the other Lithuanian municipalities about this project." The aim of the municipality is not only to install the Wi-Fi access points in the public spaces sucha as administration buildings, parks, squares, but also to have a high quality connection. Three years after the installation, the municipality will cover the costs related to the internet subscription and exploitation.
The mayor of Panevėžys district municipality, P. Žagunis is proud of his municipality's active involvement in the EU projects: "just in 2018 our municipality participated in 80 EU-financed projects", said the mayor.
